About
Julius von Lorentz is a German composer, performer, and producer who works with various media. His works oscillate between mechanical-human and sensual-technical sounds, questioning clichés and expectations of “contemporary art music.” The LEIPZIGSTIFTUNG jury described his music as “music that is both vital and reflective, and therefore thought-provoking in the most beautiful way” (Prof. Jörn Peter Hiekel). In addition to the LEIPZIGSTIFTUNG Prize, Julius von Lorentz has received the Special Prize at the Fanny Mendelssohn Composition Competition (2024), the Orkest de Ereprijs Composition Prize at YCM Apeldoorn (2024), and first prize at the international composition competition “New Music Generation” in Astana (2023).
Julius studies composition at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden with Prof. Mark Andre, Prof. em. Franz Martin Olbrisch, Prof. Stefan Prins, Prof. em. Manos Tsangaris, and Julio Zuñiga, as well as music theory with Prof. Robert Rabenalt. Previously, he was a PreCollege student with Prof. Sidney Corbett at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts.
Julius von Lorentz's works have been performed by the Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Orkest de Ereprijs, Sinfonietta Dresden, Tempus Konnex, Continuum XXI, MCME, and singers from the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and Auditiv Vokal at festivals such as wien modern, moers festival, .abeceda Contemporary Music Festival, next generation_X Karlsruhe, IMPULS Sachsen-Anhalt, and Frequenz_ Kiel.
In 2022, Julius von Lorentz was Artist in Residence at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, sponsored by Jeunesses Musicales Germany, and since 2023 he has been a scholarship holder of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes.
